4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

The Knowlton family of New England was treated in the book The History and Genealogy of the Knowltons of England and America by Charles Henry Wright Stocking in 1897, but the biographical sketches are minimal.  This Nathaniel Knowlton is #74 in the book[1-2].

Nathaniel Knowlton was born 3 May 1683 in Ipswich, Massachusetts, the first child of Nathaniel and Deborah (Jewett) Knowlton[1-4].

On 21 April 1703 in Ipswich, Nathaniel married his first wife, Mary Bennett (1686-1717), daughter of Henry and Frances (Burr) Bennett[6].  They had five children, all registered in the Ipswich town birth records:

*  Mary Knowlton (1704-1797), married 1727 Benjamin Carril (1703-1796).
*  William Knowlton (1706-1753), married 1729 Martha Pinder (1708-1775).
*  Nathaniel Knowlton (1708-1753), married (1) 1729 Mary Fuller (1708-1735).
*  Jeremiah Knowlton (1712-1713).
*  Jeremiah Knowlton (1713-1752), married 1735 Sarah Allen (1717-1796).

Mary (Bennet) Knowlton died before 1717, when Nathaniel married, secondly, to Reform (Trescott) Jewett (1694-1755) on 13 June 1717 in Ipswich[7].  Reform was the widow of Benjamin Jewett (1691-1716) and mother of Benjamin Jewett (1716-1801).  Nathaniel and Reform (Trescott) (Jewett) Knowlton had ten children, all recorded in the Ipswich town birth records:

*  Mary Knowlton (1719-????).
*  Margaret Knowlton (1720-1736).
*  Elizabeth Knowlton (1722-1722).
*  Elizabeth Knowton (1724-1724).
*  Samuel Knowlton (1726-????), married 1745 Anna Fellows (1725-1765).
*  Anna Knowlton (1728-1729)
*  Thomas Knowlton (1730-1736)
*  Ebenezzer Knowlton (1732-1736.
*  Sarah Knowlton (1735-1736).
*  Thomas Knowlton (1737-????)

Note that four of the children died in the summer of 1736 in Ipswich.  There was a smallpox epidemic in Ipswich in 1736.

In his father's will dated 25 July 1726 and proved 21 October 1726, Nathaniel Knowlton was bequeathed[5]:
"Item  I Give to my Son Nathaniell after my Wifes Decease (upon his giving a final Discharge to my Estate) one New Common Right.  As also two acres and fifty seven rods of Mowing and Tillage Land out of my Lott in Mannings Neck on ye Lower side of said lott Running through ye Lott next ye way sold Danll Smith.  The whole of my marsh lott in ye Hundred Marsh next Rowley River, But if he shall refuse to give Discharge to my Estate then my will is that he shall have Ten shillings paid him by my Executor in full of his Portion."
His mother, Deborah (Jewett) Knowlton died in 1743 and left no probate records.

Reform died in January 1755, leaving Nathaniel Knowlton with several grown children with spouses and grandchildren.

Nathaniel died after 1 February 1760 in Ipswich.  He left no estate records.  There is no known burial or cemetery record for him or his two wives.
