Carringers in the News -- Helen Carringer Dies in 1982 in Ohio

It's time for another edition of "Carringers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Carringer (my mother's maiden surname) that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from The Daily Herald [Provo, Utah]  newspaper dated 5 September 1982:

The transcription of this article is:

"Helen Carringer

"AKRON, Ohio (UPI) -- A funeral was Saturday today at the Arnold Funeral Home in Canton for Helen Carringer, a prize-winning reporter and editorial writer for the Akron Beacon Journal, who died Thursday after a short illness.  She was 59.

"Miss Carringer perhaps is best known for her nine years on the education beat for the newspaper.

"In 1972, Miss Carringer was awarded the Ohio Education Association's highest honor, the Doer's Award, for service to education.  She was praised for her understanding of the complex problems facing education.

"In addition, the National Mental Health Association recently selected an August 1981 series on the treatment of the mentally ill, written by Miss Carringer for its top journalism award.

"Beacon Journal associate editor David B. Cooper said Miss Carringer was "a fine writer and reporter who poured enormous energy and dedication into everything she tackled.

"Her analysis of complex state issues in this area was insightful and well respected.  We will miss her professionalism as well as her friendship."

"Helen Carringer," The Daily Herald [Provo, Utah] newspaper, obituary, Sunday, 5 September 1982, page 4, column 5, Helen Carringer obituary;  Newspapers.com   (https://www.newspapers.com : accessed 16 August 2021).

This obituary provides a death date and place, an age, a summary of her professional life, but nothing about her family.

Helen L. Carringer was born 28 May 1923 in Canton, Stark County, Ohio, the daughter of James Clare and Margaret E. (Kammerer) Carringer.  She died 2 September 1982 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. She did not marry.

I am a 4th cousin one time removed to Helen L. Carringer.  Our common ancestors are my 4th great-grandparents Martin Carringer (1758-1835) and Maria Magdalena Hoax (1768-1851).

There are hundreds of Carringer "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person has an impressive journalism career  I am glad that I can honor Helen Carringer today.

You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.

Disclosure:  I have a complimentary subscription to Newspapers.com and have used it extensively to find articles about my ancestral and one-name families.
