Genealogy Pot-Pourri - Week Ending 25 February 2024

Here are the highlights of my family history and genealogy related activities over the past week.

1)  Hosted and conducted the Chula Vista Genealogical Society (CVGS) DNA Interest Group Meeting on Wednesday.  Reported on the RootsTech 2024 schedule, BanyanDNA, MyHeritage's Theory of Family Relativity, DNA Painter's updated WATO feature, and my own DNA matches.

2)  Attended the CVGS Education meeting on Tuesday, where Karen led a discussion of death records.  Tried to help a guest try to find military records of her father's service in the British Army in the Suez Canal campaign in 1956.

3)  Wrote a 52 Relatives genealogical sketch for my granduncle in Edwin Thomas Richmond (1883-1935) of Connecticut and Massachusetts.

4)  Transcribed the 1883 Will of Jesse Seaver (1825-1883) of Rock County, Wisconsin for the Amanuensis Monday theme.

5)  This week's famous relative post was for 3rd Cousin 8 Times Removed Samuel Adams (1722-1803) of Massachusetts, a Declaration of Independence Signer according to Relative Finder.

6)  Worked with some of the lines to distant cousins using the "Relatives at RootsTech" app on the website.  I'm up to 30,631 relatives who have registered (I had over 70,000 last year).  Most of them are 8th to 15th cousins, but my #1 cousin is a 1st cousin 1x removed.

7)  Watched the MyHeritage 20-year anniversary videos.  Watched several Family Tree Webinars, including Thomas MacEntee's "AI and Genealogy: Trouble Ahead," Steve Little's "Artificial Intelligence and Genealogy," and Paul Woodbury's "Anchors Are the Way."

8)  AncestryDNA now has 45,404 DNA matches (up 57 from 18 February) with 1937 "close" matches, for me today, with 2 new ThruLines (1 was wrong IMHO).  I added Notes to 4 new Matches.    MyHeritageDNA now has 12,199 DNA matches (up 49 from 18 February) for me, with no new Theories (now have 19).  Reviewed the new DNA matches on AncestryDNA, MyHeritageDNA, FamilyTreeDNA and 23andMe.

9)  Occasionally matched RootsMagic 9 profiles to FamilySearch Family Tree.  I have matched 50,647 of my RootsMagic persons with FamilySearch Family Tree profiles (up 43).

10) Used Web Hints and Record Matches from Ancestry, MyHeritage, Findmypast and FamilySearch to add content and source citations to my RootsMagic profiles. I now have 72,262 persons in my RootsMagic family tree (up 44), and 146,614 source citations (up 31).  Resolved 581 Ancestry Hints. TreeShared 162 new and updated profiles with my Ancestry tree.  My Ancestry Member Tree has Ancestry Record Hints with 15,928 to be resolved, but I work on them several times a week.

11) Wrote 16 Genea-Musings blog posts last week (Sunday through Saturday), of which 3 were a press release. The most viewed post last week was
Introducing Family Tree Maker 2024   with over 330 views.  Genea-Musings had about 42,000 page views last week.

12)  Real life:  This is week 207 since COVID restrictions started.   I visited Linda every day at the skilled nursing/memory care facility until Friday, when I came down with a cold. Went grocery shopping on Monday and Friday.  Walked several days on the block and talked to several neighbors.   I finished reading Iris Johansen's Sight Unseen and started Tess Gerritsen's Vanish.  The SDSU Aztec basketball team went 1-1 and they are 21-7 on the season.  Watched parts of two Padres spring training games.  It sucks to be sick.  Bored, tired, sleepy.  Glad I didn't plan to go to RootsTech.
