Genealogy Pot-Pourri - Week Ending 3 March 2024

Here are the highlights of my family history and genealogy related activities over the past week.

1)  Attended the Chula Vista Genealogical Society (CVGS) General Meeting on Wednesday.  J. Mark Lowe presented “Making Those Early Census Records Talk to You.”

2)  Attended RootsTech 2024 virtually, mainly watching the available class videos.  I wrote three blog posts to document my viewing:

Enjoyed reading all of the blog posts and Facebook posts, and photos, from RootsTech attendees, both in-person and virtual.

3)  From a research perspective, the most important announcement from RootsTech 2024 was the FamilySearch Labs experiment for Full Text Search (https://www.familysearch.org/search/full-text).  The full text search for United States Land and Probate records is a game-changer - it enables us to find records for our ancestors as grantees, grantors, testators, executors, administrators, witnesses, neighbors, etc.  I wrote Testing the Full Text Search in FamilySearch Labs - An Immediate Success!! to demonstrate using it on a thorny research problem.

4)  Transcribed the 1830/1831 Quitclaim Deeds of George W. Patridge and Others to David W. Patridge, and of Catherine Patridge to David Patridge, in Trumbull County, Ohio for the Amanuensis Monday theme.  My third great-grandfather, Cornelius Feather and his wife Mary were part of the "Others" as grantees of the deed.  This provides evidence that Mary Feather was a daughter of Thomas Patridge - she didn't have a last name before.

5)  Worked with some of the lines to distant cousins using the "Relatives at RootsTech" app on the website.  I'm up to 40,600 relatives who have registered (I had over 70,000 last year).

6)  Reviewed the new MyHeritage offerings of improved family tree profiles and the OldNews collection.

7)  Found the 1848 baptism record of great-grandfather Thomas Richman in the Wiltshire Non-Conformist church records - see Treasure Chest Thursday - 1848 Baptism of Thomas Richman (1848-1917) in Trowbridge, Wiltshire.

8)  AncestryDNA now has 45,448 DNA matches (up 44 from 25 February) with 1937 "close" matches, for me today, with 2 new ThruLines (1 was wrong IMHO).  I added Notes to 2 new Matches.    MyHeritageDNA now has 12,259 DNA matches (up 60 from 25 February) for me, with no new Theories (I now have 19).  Reviewed the new DNA matches on AncestryDNA, MyHeritageDNA, FamilyTreeDNA and 23andMe.

9)  Occasionally matched RootsMagic 9 profiles to FamilySearch Family Tree.  I have matched 50,694 of my RootsMagic persons with FamilySearch Family Tree profiles (up 47).

10) Used Web Hints and Record Matches from Ancestry, MyHeritage, Findmypast and FamilySearch to add content and source citations to my RootsMagic profiles. I now have 72,311 persons in my RootsMagic family tree (up 49), and 146,618 source citations (up 4).  Resolved no Ancestry Hints. TreeShared no new and updated profiles with my Ancestry tree.  My Ancestry Member Tree has Ancestry Record Hints with 17,178 to be resolved, but I work on them several times a week.

11) Wrote 22 Genea-Musings blog posts last week (Sunday through Saturday), of which 6 were a press release. The most viewed post last week was

Randy (Not) At RootsTech 2024 - Day 1 (Thursday)  with over 188 views.  Genea-Musings had about 31,700 page views last week.

12)  Real life:  This is week 208 since COVID restrictions started.   I visited Linda over the weekend at the skilled nursing/memory care facility after recovering from my cold. Went grocery shopping on Monday and Friday.  Walked several days on the block and talked to several neighbors.   Led the church men's Bible study on Saturday morning.  I finished reading Tess Gerritsen's Vanish, but haven't started another book yet. The SDSU Aztec basketball team went 1-0 and they are 22-7 on the season.   It was a really busy week!!
