Devier James Lamphier "D.J." Smith (1839-1894) was born 1 May 1839 in Jefferson County, New York to unknown parents; he was adopted by Ranslow and Mary (Bell) Smith of Henderson, Jefferson County, New York in about 1840. Devier died 7 May 1894 in McCook, Red Willow County, Nebraska. He married Abigail A. "Abbie" Vaux (1844-1931) on 4 April 1861 in Rolling Prairie, Dodge County, Wisconsin.
