Sarah (Clark) Bowers (1651-1704)  is number 545 on my Ahnentafel List, my 7th great-grandmother, who married #544 Samuel Smith (1641-1691) in 1677 in Medfield, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.

Sarah Clarke was born 20 February 1650/1 in Dedham, Massachusetts, the daughter of Joseph and Alice (Fenn) Clarke[1, 4-5].  Her birth record in the Dedham town record book says:

"Sary the Daughter of Joseph & Alice Clarkewas borne the 20 of the 12 m'h [1650]"

Sarah Clarke married John Bowers (1646-1676) of Medfield on 7 January 1673/4 in Medfield[3].  They had one son:

*  John Bowers (1675-1729), married 1702 Hannah Partridge (1677-1761).

The History of Medfield, Massachusetts book has this information about John Bowers[2]:

"John [Bowers] came with his father [John Bowers to Medfield]. He married in 1673 Sarah Clark; and, about this time, he appears to have had a house near his father's. His house was burned and its owner slain on the day of the Indian attack upon the town [during King Phillip's War]. His widow was married to Samuel Smith (whose wife was also slain by the Indians) on the first anniversary of the mournful event." 

One year after her first husband's death, Sarah (Clarke) Bowers married on 22 February 1677 to Samuel Smith (1641-1691) of Medfield[8], who had lost his first wife in the Indian attack on 21 February 1676.

Samuel and Sarah (Clarke) (Bowers) Smith had seven children, all recorded in the Medfield town record book:

*  Sarah Smith (1679-1769), married (1) 1701 Mathias Evans (1670-1725); (2) 1726 Henry Harding (1673-1764).

*  Henry Smith (1680-1743), married (1) 1703 Deborah Pratt (1684-1705); (2) 1708 Mary Adams (1681-1725); (3) 1730 Ruth Barber (1696-1761).

*  Daniel Smith (1682-1704).

*  Nathaniel Smith (1684-1762), married (1) 1705 Mary Clark (1687-1717); (2) 1717 Lydia Partridge (1687-1773).

*  Abigail Smith (1686-1726), married 1705 John Fisher (1677-1727).

*  Mary Smith (1688-1774), married (1) 1706 Henry Plimpton (1684-1731); (2) 1732 Jabez Pond (1677-1749); (3) 1750 Joseph Wight (1681-1756).

*  Prudence Smith (1691-1784), married (1) 1711 Joseph White (1683-1737); (2) 1739 Benoni Benson (1684-1761). 

  Samuel Smith died on 25 October 1691 in Medfield, aged 50.  There is no probate record for him in Suffolk or Middlesex Counties.

Sarah (Clarke) (Bowers) Smith died 20 May 1704[6-7], and was probably buried in Vine Lake Cemetery in Medfield, Massachusetts.  There is a Find A Grave memorial for her, but there is no gravestone photograph[7].

Seavers in the News -- Ethel Van Vliet Seaver Dies in 1934 in California

It's time for another edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from The Times-Tribune [Scranton, Penn.] newspaper dated 21 May 1934:

The transcription of the article is:

"Mrs. Ethel Van Vliet Seaver, formerly of this city, died Saturday at Santa Monica, Cal., after an apendicitis operation.  Besides her husband, Horace, she leaves a son, John V. Seaver; her parents Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Van Vliet, of this city; three sisters, Mrs. H.L. Vail and Portia Van Vliet, of this city; Laura Van Vliet, of Philadelphia; two brothers, Arthur Van Vliet, of Pasadena, Cal.; Ralph Van Vliet, of Scarasdale, N.Y."

The source citation is:

"Obituaries," The Times-Tribune [Scranton, Penn.] newspaper, obituary, Monday, 21 May 1934, page 29, column 5, Mrs. Ethel Van Vliet Seaver obituary;   Newspapers.com   (https://www.newspapers.com : accessed 18 June 2020).

This obituary provides a death date (implied as Saturday, 19 May 1934), the spouse's name, the son's name, her parents and siblings.   

I had Ethel (Van Vliet) Seaver (1892-1934) in my RootsMagic database.  She married Horace Seaver (1887-1945) in about 1920 in California, and they had one child:

*  John Van Vliet Seaver (1922-2006), married about 1948 Jean Northington (1929-2009).

Horace Seaver is my 8th cousin, 2 times removed.  The common ancestors are Robert Seaver (1608-1683) and Elizabeth Ballard (1616-1657).

There are over 9,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and some people die relatively young.  I am glad that I can honor Ethel (Van Vliet) Seaver today.  

You never know when a descendant will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors, or will provide more information about them to me.

Dipping Into Denmark Church Records: 1863 Marriage of Hans Lauritzen Hede and Kirstine Sorensen

My grandsons have Danish ancestry through their father.  His grandparents came from Denmark in 1906 and settled in Chicago.

FamilySearch has a nice list of 28 Denmark record collections, and many of them are indexed and have record images.  I am using the "Denmark Church Records, 1484-1941" collection for these records.

Today, I'm looking for the marriage record of Hans Lauritzen Hede and Kirstine Sorensen who married 15 September 1863 in Gram, Haderslev, Denmark.

The marriage record is the top record on the page.  Here is the record showing the column headings:

The groom's information is in the first column (including birth, baptism and confirmation dates), the bride's information is in the second column (including birth, baptism and confirmation dates), the sponsors are in the 3rd column, the marriage date is the 4th column.  Hans Lauritzen Hede (born 23 October 1838 in Vesterlindet) and Kirstine Sorensen (born 26 April 1842 in Tiset) married on 15 September 1863 in Gram, Haderslev, Denmark. 

The source citation for this marriage record is:

The treasure today is the 1651 birth record of Sary Clarke in the Dedham, Massachusetts town record book:

was borne the 20 of the 12 m'h [1650]"

This is probably an Original Source record for the birth of Sary Clarke.   It is Primary Information and Direct Evidence of the birth date, place, parents names and the name of Sary. 

Sary Clarke (1651-1704) is my 7th great-grandmother, the daughter of Joseph and Alice (Fenn) Clarke. She married (1) John Bowers (1641-1676) and they had one child  She married (2) Samuel Smith (1641-1691), and they had seven children.  I am descended through their son, Henry Smith (1680-1743) and their daughter, Abigail Smith (1686-1726).

Finding Richmans, Richs, Marshmans in the Hilperton Land Tax Assessment Records, 1773-1793 - Part I

Continuing my quest for finding the parents of my John Richman (1788-1867) in Hilperton, Wiltshire, England, I recalled that I had obtained digital images of the Hilperton and Whaddon Land Tax Assessment, 1773-1884 from Family History Library microfilm 1278837 (Items 23-24) over several years, but I have not copied all of the pages.

My thought was that perhaps I could find where my John Richman, John Rich and John Marshman families resided in the 1780-1850 time frame, and what their relative location was.

Here is a map of Hilperton from about the 1773 time frame:

There are perhaps 50 buildings shown on the map above, with some in Hilperton Marsh.

A current 2020 map of Hilperton shows many more houses, as would be expected, and mostly in the Hilperton Marsh area, but the major roads are essentially the same:

The Hilperton parish church is about where the "H" in Hilperton is on the 2020 map.  The road that the Hilperton Village Hall is on leads off to Whaddon to the northeast.  Hilperton Marsh is to the northwest, via Hill Street.  Church Street starts where Hill St. and Whaddon Lane meet, and bends to the south to Devizes Road.  Devizes Road is the road that the Lion & Fiddle is on where Church Street meets it.  Elizabeth Way is part of Trowbridge and not Hilperton.

Here is the first page of the tax assessment records in Hilperton and Whaddon for 1773:

The format changes over time, the names change some over time, and the amount of tax assessed is constant after 1775.  The left-hand column has the names of the land owners.  Some of the lines on the image above have more than one name to denote a former owner or an occupier of the land.

The names, and their relative position on the list, don't change much over the range of years I have available.

I carefully reviewed the lists for each available year and made a table of the entries for Richman, Rich, and Marshman.  Here is the table:

The numbers in the second column are the lines from the first name on the list.  For 1793, John Richman is the 20th line down the list and Mark Richman is the 49th line.  These line numbers change slightly over time.

I will provide more analysis in the next post in this series.  I wish I had copied more pages in 2018 when I was at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City.  This microfilm has not been digitized yet.
