Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Your 16 Great-Great-Grands

It's almost Saturday Night - time for some Genealogy Fun!

Do you have a pedigree chart that shows you as #1 and goes back five generations? If not, you should make one! Fire up your software program and create a report and save it (you'll see why in am inute!).

Here is your SNGF assignment for the evening (if you choose to accept it - this is not stump the genealogist or even Mission Impossible):

1) List your 16 great-great-grandparents in pedigree chart order. List their birth and death years and places.

2) Figure out the dominant ethnicity or nationality of each of them.

3) Calculate your ancestral ethnicity or nationality by adding them up for the 16 - 6.25% for each (obviously, this is approximate).

4) If you don't know all 16 of your great-great-grandparents, then do it for the last full generation you have.

5) Write your own blog post, or make a comment on Facebook or in this post.

Here's mine:

1. Isaac Seaver: born 16 Oct 1823 in Westminster, Worcester County, MA; married 9 Sep 1851 in Walpole, Norfolk County, MA; died 12 Mar 1901 in Leominster, Worcester County, MA. ENGLISH

16. Mary Jane Sovereen: born 29 Dec 1840 in prob. Delhi, Norfolk County, ONTARIO; died 20 May 1874 in Middleton, Norfolk County, ONTARIO, CANADA. GERMAN

As far as I can tell, my ethnicity is European (Y-DNA haplogroup is R, mtDNA haplogroup is H).

My "nationalities" are 13 ENGLISH (10 from early colonial New England) and 3 GERMAN - so 81% English, 19% German. Another generation back would add a Dutch line.

This was real easy to do once I made the ahnentafel list in RootsMagic 4. I saved it as an RTF file, and copied/pasted the 5th generation into the post above. Piece of cake!

One of the great things about writing a blog post like this is that now other searchers can find you on the Internet in a search engine.

UPDATED 11 p.m. - That smart blonde Sheri Fenley figured out that there are 16 great-great-grands not 16 great-grands like I originally posted. You know, it's easy to spell check but harder to content check! Sheri gets an A+ if she posts her 16 GGGP. Some of the bloggers posted their 16 GGGPs and noted the fact, my challenge notwithstanding.

I'm going to cheat and not do the full 16 g-grandparent list. My ethnicity is European, 100% German to be exact. My husband's is European too, German and English aa far back as g-grandparents, more of a Heinz 57 variety mix further back...pretty much every European nationality.

Hope you can take a few days to recover from Grandpa Camp. Those little ones can wear a person out.

I don't think you can create a list like this in Legacy, can you? I can create an Ancestry Report but it will only give me names and dates of birth and deaths, no marriages or locations (unless I'm doing something wrong).

It's a lot of work to put this report together by hand... Saturday night fun might turn into Sunday morning not so fun ;-)

I did mine and have 8 from Scotland, 7 from England and 1 from France! I usually miss Sat nite fun but since you posted early I got to read it before Sunday morning !

I guess I don't really need a report to tell me I'm 100% Polish! :-)

This was fun!

Great Fun! Here's my contribution over at Random Relatives.

Randy, another fun challenge. Here's my blog post on my 16 Great Greats... http://www.geneamusings.com/2009/08/saturday-night-genealogy-fun-your-16.html

I am pretty much French, French and more French with some Aboriginal in the mix. My family was actually the first "family" of Canada and have been documented as such, put on Canadian postage and have statues erected in their honor as being such.
Here is my post:

My ahnentafel excerpt is posted at BeNotForgot.com. Thanks again, Randy -- that was fun!?! V.

I have a lot of work to do. My report is full of question marks. You can read my post here and if you have ideas on what I should do next leave me a comment.

Great fun, Randy!

I also did one for my wife's side. A lot more information there and a lot of origins.

Here's mine: ShowMeAncestors.

I'm also going to post a couple of others for my other research.

I posted a little late. Nothing too revealing here as I am 100% Heinz 57. Thanks for a fun topic.

Greetings Randy,
Excellent idea for SNGF! It was a breeze to do in Legacy. I'm glad to now have my 16 great-great-grands posted on my blog.
Kathryn

This was fun. It points out again that I need to find those Jones ancestors! That was one of my 2009 goals. Better get to it!

Posted mine on my blog, www.marysfamilytree.blogspot.com.

Hi Randy!
Used RootsMagic and my list is posted on "West in New England"
at http://tinyurl.com/l4roe3

Thanks for the topic, Randy. I had fun finding the info for this post. My post is at http://tinashopesanddreams.blogspot.com/2009/08/my-16-great-great-grandparents.html

Well, this exercise certainly pointed out where the big holes are in my research up to this point. My SNGF is posted at http://gretabog.blogspot.com/2009/08/14-of-my-16-greats.html. I think most of my great-greats have mixed ethnicity, but I would estimate that 5-10 percent is "other" (Welsh, German/Dutch, possibly French), and the other 90-95 percent is almost evenly divided between Scots-Irish and English, with perhaps a slight advantage to the Scots-Irish.

Not sure why my link didn't show below, but here's mine from Saturday night:

A little late but I enjoyed this exercise, I learned something in RM4!

Hi Randy
What a great idea! I don't have one set of great great grandparents so I did the Eight of the Greats.

EIGHT OF THE GREAT

These are my great grandparents… on a Wednesday morning:

1. Charles Daniel Fermazin was born on Nov 14, 1859 in Rynarzewo, Posen, Prussia and died on June 13, 1913 in Aurora, Illinois. On August 16, 1885 he married:

2. Wilhelmine Pluecker was born on June 6, 1868 in Aurora, Illinois and died Apr 17, 1952 in Aurora, Illinois.

3. Mathias Linden was born on March 27, 1854 in Waldbillig, Luxembourg and died on June 3, 1909 in Aurora, Illinois. On January 4, 1882 he married:

4. Catherina Pott (Pootz) was born on March 2, 1853 in Lipperscheid, Luxembourg and died on Feb 8 1917 in Aurora, Illinois.

5. Richard Seth Worthing was born on April 15, 1819 in Llananno, Radnorshire,Wales and died on December 18, 1907 in Truro, Madison, Iowa. On Oct 1, 1842 he married:

6. Sarah Ingram who was born on Nov 29, 1821 in Llwynbeddw Mill, Llannano Radnorshire Wales.

7. Ira Daniel Ames was born on July 4, 1842 in Liberty Township, Mc Kean, Pennsylvania and died on Sept 21, 1895 in Albion, Dane, Wisconsin. On June 25, 1868 he married:

8. Cornelia A. Palon was born on April 9, 1847 in Albion, Dane, Wisconsin and died on March 7, 1893 in Lake Koshkonong, Jefferson, Wisconsin.

Based on Randy's calculation methods my ethnicity is 37.5% English and 62.5% Irish.

I wonder though how it is that even if our family members have been in Canada (or the United States) for several generations, we still determine our ethnicity on the distant ancestors that first immigrated to our countries. It would seem to me that my ethnicity based on my 16 great, great grandparents is actually 50% Canadian, 25% Irish, and 25% English.I am proud to have deep roots in Canada and I am proud to call myself a Canadian Canadian versus Irish Canadian or . . .

Linda Hurtubise - I was intriged by the same thing - some of the lists I looked at showed ancestry in Massachusetts for a number of generations, yet the writer claimed "English" ethnicity for those ancestors.

A+ A+ A+ A+

Hey Seaver, I posted them all over at The Educated Genealogist -

www.sherifenley.blogspot.com

I'll take that "A+" and hang it proudly on my wall!

This is a great idea! I am a bit late to jump on the bandwagon and I found you via a Twitter post (http://twitter.com/h_vk/status/3302006897), but at least I made it! Here are my sweet 16: http://tinyurl.com/neqf5x

I did this and found that all of my 16 GG Grandparents were born in North America. You can read the post where I wrote about it on my blog:

For hours I have been looking and reading other articles about Saturday Night Genealogy Fun Your 16 Great-Great-Grands.
By the way what a bunch of generic viagra blogs related are in the web!, just amazing.
But back to topic, your post is by far the most interesting, accurate and useful information.
Thanks for sharing and have a nice day.
