I check the www.NothingButsoftware.com web site occasionally for good deals on genealogy software (and other genres too). As of today, here are the deals available (perhaps for a limited time or until supplies last) for FamilyTreeMaker software:
* FamilyTreeMaker 2008 Platinum - $79.95 - includes a 6-month US Deluxe subscription to Ancestry.com (Subscription term begins upon installation of your Family Tree Maker software).
* FamilyTreeMaker 2008 Deluxe - $34.95 - includes a 3-month US Deluxe subscription to Ancestry.com (Subscription term begins upon installation of your Family Tree Maker software).
* FamilyTreeMaker 2008 Essentials - $19.95 - includes a 1-month US Deluxe subscription to Ancestry.com (Subscription term begins upon installation of your Family Tree Maker software).
* FamilyTreeMaker Version 16 Essentials - $19.95 - includes a 3-month US Deluxe subscription to Ancestry.com (Subscription term begins upon installation of your Family Tree Maker software).
* FamilyTreeMaker Version 16 Standard - $27.95 - includes a 6-month US Deluxe subscription to Ancestry.com (Subscription term begins upon installation of your Family Tree Maker software).
As you can see, there are some excellent deals here if you are interested in an Ancestry.com US Deluxe subscription (which retails at $155.40 per year).
I used this site for my current 12-month Ancestry.com subscription - I paid $19.95 for FTM 16 plus the one-year US Deluxe subscription last October.
It appears that, at least for the FTM 2008 deals, your subscription starts when you install and/or register your software. A current subscriber could buy one of these packages, wait until their subscription runs out, and on the next day install and register the software and start their new Ancestry subscription.
I wonder why the web site thinks that FTM 16 is produced by Encore software and FTM 2008 is produced by Broderbund Software?

Hi Randy,
A couple of these are actually cheaper if ordered through Amazon.com, although they ship from NothingButSoftware:
Family Tree Maker 2008 Platinum $64.99
Family Tree Maker 2008 Essentials $16.49
Also, I've heard some people say that after they've installed their software, they've called Ancestry.com for an extension of their existing subscription. I don't know if Ancestry still does this, but I know they have in the past.
Thanks for keeping us informed!

(Still trying to figure out how to buy FTM2009!)
Elizabeth,

I'd recommend Legacy 7 or RootsMagic 3 (possibly with free upgrade to version 4 by now, as version 4 is scheduled to appear before the end of the year).
However, if you already have FTM2008, just make sure you are registered, and you should receive an offer for a free upgrade to FTM 2009.
Randy did not mention this, but because of the free upgrade, these FTM 2008 offers are probably the cheapest way to get your hands on FTM 2009.

I believe the older version of FTM were created by Broderbund. I have an old copy think "16" that was from them at least.
Not really a fan on them anymore after 2008, took 10 minutes on my machines just to load the software. Will see how 09 goes.
Small update: Just received the FTM 2009 update mail with coupon code, but the Ancestry.com store server is taking a huge beating from a rather large flock of FTM 2008 users eager to get the upgrade.
