Best of the Genea-Blogs - 8-14 July 2012

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.
My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for the genealogy carnivals, or other meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  Some Basic Principles of Genealogy by James Tanner on the Genealogy's Star blog.  James lists six basic principles - can you add to them?

*  You Have a Story, Too! by Melvin J. Collier on the Roots Revealed blog.  Mel attended Rachel Swarn's book signing, and came away with an insight that the book could have been written about any African-American who is a descendant of slaves.  He then tells some of his story.  Excellent post!

*  Genealogy Blogging - for Fun and Profit? 2012 Update;  Careers in Genealogy - A 2012 Update; How Do You Make Money? - A 2012 Update ; Money Changes Everything- Or Does It? A 2012 Update by Thomas MacEntee on the Geneabloggers blog.  Thomas updates his earlier series, and provides insight into the money side of genealogy.

*  Genealogy Blogging - For Fun, Purpose, or Profit;  What Do You Do for a Living?   and Not For Free, But for a Fair and Reasonable Fee by Caroline M. Pointer on the Blogging Genealogy blog.  Caroline has views about this subject...

*  Professional Genealogists and Genealogy Professionals;  Charging for Genealogy: What is It Worth? by Michael Hait on the Planting the Seeds blog.  Michael takes on the professional terminology and money questions.

*  Where is My Free Genealogy Data? by Illya D'Addezio on the Genealogy Today blog.  Illya discusses the costs of acquiring, digitizing and hosting genealogy databases from his experience.

*  Google and the Genealogical Proof Standard by Debbie Parker Wayne on the Deb's Delvings in Genealogy blog.  Debbie has some interesting suggestions and links.

*  What Are You Doing to Nurture the Next Generation of Genealogists? A Follow Friday Challenge by Denise Levenick on The Family Curator blog.  Denise recounts the speech she didn't make at Jamboree and challenges all of us to nurture young genealogists.

*  Allen County Research Trip, Just a Few Finds and  Moving to the Techy Side by Carol Stevens on the Reflections From the Fence blog.  Carol took her iPad to ACPL to do research, and summarizes her experiences.

*  The Missing Corpus Delecti by Judy G. Russell on The Legal Genealogist blog.  Judy finds them ost interesting cases in the historical newspapers and the legal profession.

Several genea-bloggers wrote weekly pick posts and news summary posts this week, including:

*  Monday Morning Mentions by Lynn Palermo on The Armchair Genealogist blog.

*  Ruth's Recommendations by Ruth Blair on The Passionate Genealogist blog.

*  Monday Recap for July 9, 2012 by Amanda on the Geni Blog.

*  Follow Friday: This Week's Favorite Finds by Jen on the Climbing My Family Tree blog.

*  Genealogy News Corral - July 9-13 by Diane Haddad, on the Genealogy Insider blog.

*  Follow Friday - Fab Finds for July 13, 2012 by Jana Last on Jana's Genealogy and Family History Blog.

*  Friday Finds - 07/13/12 by Julie Cahill Tarr on the GenBlog blog.

I encourage readers to go to the blogs listed above and read their articles, and add their blogs to your Favorites, Google Reader, RSS feed or email if you like what you read. Please make a comment to them also - all bloggers appreciate feedback on what they write.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 1280 genealogy bloggers using Google Reader, but I still miss quite a few it seems.
