Tuesday's Tip - California Digital Newspaper Collection

This week's Tuesday's Tip is:  For California historical newspapers, check out the California Digital Newspaper Collection (CDNC) at http://cdnc.ucr.edu/cdnc.

The home page provides information about the collection:

"This collection contains 59,822 issues comprising 534,354 pages and 6,224,759 articles.  The California Digital Newspaper Collection is a project of the Center for Bibliographical Studies and Research (CBSR) at the University of California, Riverside."

You can see the list of titles, and years available, here.

I entered "Joseph Whittle" (with quote marks for exact word order) in the screen above and clicked the Search button.  The results came in a list with the search terms highlighted:

I scrolled down a bit and clicked on one of the matches:

The linked article is highlighted, and the search terms are highlighted in yellow in the article.  I used the zoom icons (or the mouse wheel) to magnify the image.  I could move around the image using the left mouse button.  I could save the page by right-clicking on the page image and selecting "PDF of this page" and then saving it to my computer files.

This site is one of several that I use to find historical California newspaper images for my Seaver and Leland family history research.

Thanks Randy for posting this for everyone. I have this link on my site as well. I have been using this database for years and it is outstanding, especially for pre-1920 California newspaper research. I have found hundreds of clippings that pertain to my ancestors.
