Best of the Genea-Blogs - 16 to 22 August 2015

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  Challenge #30: Critical Analysis by Susan Farrell Bankhead on the Brick Wall Genealogist blog.  Susan tackles this important task in the GPS.

*  Citations, Rigmarole, & Aha! Moments by Elizabeth Shown Mills on the Evidence Explained QuickTips blog.  What matters in a source citation?  Elizabeth explains.

*  Did Great-Grandpa Grow Hemp? by Amy Johnson Crow on the Amy Johnson Crow blog.  Amy explores a person's entry in the agricultural schedule in the 1850. census

*  Tracing Orphans in Your Ancestry by D. Joshua Taylor on the JSTOR Daily blog.  Josh reviews the problem of orphaned ancestors and how to find records for them.

*  Moving Part 5:  Learning to Research in a New Community by Cari Taplin on the Genealogy Pants blog.  Cari moved from Denver to Austin, and describes how she is getting along in new-to-her repositories.

*  Ethnicity Testing and Results by Roberta J. Estes on the DNAeXplained - Genetic Genealogy blog.  This is an excellent overview of ethnicity estimates and chromosome browsing.

*  Lisa Elzey WDYTYA? and Story Telling - #BYUFHGC and Lisa Elzey #BYUFHGC Presentation, Part 2 by the writer of The Ancestry Insider blog.  Mr. AI describes Lisa's presentation about how WDYTYA? research works.

*  The Limits of Ownership by Judy G. Russell on The Legal Genealogist blog.  Judy addresses copyright protection of a photo of an older photo.

*  Reflections of a Grandmother by Jacquie Schattner on the Seeds to Tree blog.  Three generations back, two generations forward, love binds.

*  Hey Soldier, What's Your Name?  Crowdsourcing IDs in Old Photos (TUTORIAL) by Denise Levenick on The Family Curator blog.

*  GeneaGem:  Genealogical Periodicals and Newsletters by Linda Stufflebean on the Empty Branches on the Family Tree blog.  Linda highlights the unique offerings of society newsletters and periodicals.

Appreciate the mention Randy. From your comment, it's easy to see that you and Linda are happy grandparents too. In the past, you've written about how you enjoy your grandchildren's visits so I know you understand. Again, thanks!
