Best of the Genea-Blogs - 28 February to 5 March 2016

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  When It's Time to Come Home by Jacqi Stevens on A Family Tapestry blog.  Jacqi has been writing about life.

*  DNA Bombshell: John Smith Origins Uncovered by Robyn on the Reclaiming Kin blog.  Robyn did some great detective work here.

*  FamilySearch Adds to its Online YouTube Channel by James Tanner on the Rejoice, and be Exceeding Glad blog.  Who knew?  There are some excellent videos here.

*  FamilySearch Goes Viral in Brazil by Jesse Hyde on the FamilySearch Blog.  Post an interesting record collection and they will come!

*  4 Things I've Learned about Researching Eastern European Ancestors by Schalene Dagutis on the Tangled Roots and Trees blog.  Schalene discusses Calendar, Religion, Country and Language issues.

*  Thanks for 20 Years of Excellence!! by Judy G. Russell on The Legal Genealogist blog.  Judy reviews the history of Cyndi's List and Cyndi Ingle.  Amen!

*  RootsTech Review: Through The Eyes of an Unknown Presenter and RootsTech Review: What Were The Best Classes Not Streamed? by Andy Lee on Devon Lee's A Patient Genealogist blog.  Andy went to RootsTech and saw and did interesting things.

*  Six Reasons Why a Human is Better than Google Translate for Genealogy Documents by Katherine Schober on Thomas MacEntee's Geneabloggers blog.  Katherine uses German phrases to make the point.

*  I know my ancestors are from Ireland: What do I do next? by Frederick Wertz on the Findmypast Blog.  This post provides basic information about the Irish research process.

*  Looking for Old Newspapers?  Get Your %#8& to the Library by Kenneth Marks on The Ancestor Hunt blog.  I think Ken spelled "Behind" wrong, but it's a great observation.

*  Reasonably Exhaustive Research by Elizabeth Shown Mills on the Evidence Explained QuickTips Blog.  ESM does it in 172 words - good stuff!

*  Losing a Personal Genealogical Giant by Dave McDonald on the Thinking Genealogically blog.  Dave describes the relative who helped him get started in genealogy research.

*  When the Females Can't Be Found by Michael John Neill on the Rootdig.com blog.  Michel discusses six potential scenarios and the methods to research them.
