Treasure Chest Thursday -- 1686 Birth Record of Mary Benet in Ipswich, Mass.

It's Treasure Chest Thursday - a chance to look in my digital image files to see what treasures I can find for my family history and genealogy musings.

The treasure today is the 1686 birth record of Mary Benet in the Ipswich, Massachusetts town record book:

The birth record for Mary Benet is the 8th entry on the left-hand page:

This record says:

"Mary, daughter to Henry and Frances Benet born March y'e 3d 1685."

The source citation for this record is:

"Massachusetts, Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988," indexed database and digital image, Ancestry.com (https://www.ancestry.com, "Ipswich Church Records, Earmarks, Births, Marriages, Deaths," page 8 (image 38 of 326), Mary Benet birth entry, 3 March 1685.

This Ipswich town record is a Derivative Source (because it is obviously a transcription of an earlier record) with Primary Information and Direct Evidence of the name of Mary Benet and her parents, and the birth date and place.  The Original Source is a town record book birth register that is no longer available.  This is still Primary Information and Direct Evidence for the names and birth event.

Mary Bennett (1686-1717) was the first child and daughter of Henry and Frances (Burr) Bennett of Ipswich, Massachusetts.  She married Nathaniel Knowlton (1683-1760) in 1703 in Ipswich, Massachusetts.

The birth date is probably 3 March 1685/6.  It is listed with late 1685 and early 1686 birth records.  Also, her parents married on 20 May 1685.  It makes more sense that she was born 9+ months after the marriage than two months before the marriage.

Nathaniel and Mary (Bennett) Knowlton are my 7th great-grandparents, through their son Jeremiah Knowlton (1713-1752) who married Sarah Allen (1717-1796) in 1735 in Sudbury, Massachusetts.
