Seavers in the News -- Miss Eleanor Dezell Seaver Dies in 1974 in Maine

Here is this week's edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from The Sanford Journal Tribune [Biddeford, Maine] newspaper dated 18 April 1974, page 2:

The transcription of the article is:

"MISS ELEANOR D. SEAVER

"Miss Eleanor Dezell Seaver, 77, of Mousam Lake road, Springvale, died Friday at the H.D. Goodall Hospital.

"She was born at Canton, N.Y., May 18, 1896, daughter of Henry E. and Charlotte Dezell Seaver, and had been a local resident for the past year.

"Miss Seaver was graduated from Sargent School for Physical Education, now a part of Boston University and attended summer sessions at Columbia University's Teachers College and Cornell University.  She was a physical education instructor in public schools at Passaic, N.J., and taught physical education and current events at Passaic Collegiate School until her retirement about 1952.

" While at Passaic she was active in the Monday Afternoon Club and the Passaic Tennis Club. Miss Seaver resided briefly in New York City, then moved to Portland in 1959 where she was active in the Women's Literary Union and the YWCA and did volunteer work in the records department at Mercy Hospital.

"There are no near survivors.  Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Canton, N.Y."

"Miss Eleanor D. Seaver," The Sanford Journal Tribune [Biddeford, Me.] newspaper, Thursday, 18 April 1974, page 2, column 6, Eleanor Dezell Seaver obituary,   Newspapers.com   (https://www.newspapers.com : accessed 17 July 2023).

This obituary is very complete - it identifies her birth date and place, parents names, education, residences  occupation, and associations.

Eleanor Dezell Seaver (1896-1974) was born 18 May 1896 in Canton, New York, the daughter of Henry Ellison Chase and Charlotte (Dezell) Seaver. She died 2 April 1974 in Waterboro, Maine.  She had no siblings, and did not marry.

Eleanor Dezell Seaver (1896-1974) is my 7th cousin three times removed, with the common Seaver ancestor of my 9th great-grandfather, Robert Seaver (1608-1683).

There are over 10,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person has a fairly complete obituary.  I am glad that I can honor  Eleanor Dezell Seaver today.

You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.
