Joseph Colby (1680-1754) is #884 on my Ahnentafel List, my 7th great-grandfather, who married  #885 Anne Bartlett (1684-1721)  in 1704 in mesbury, Massachusetts.

The book Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury provides a short summary of the family of Joseph Colby[1].  He was of Amesbury, Massachusetts East Parish and Hampstead, New Hampshire; Hampstead was part of Amesbury until 1741.

Joseph Colby was born about 1680 in Amesbury, Massachusetts, the youngest son of John and Sarah Eldridge) Colby of Amesbury[1].

He married, first, on 22 November 1704 in Amesbury, to Anne Bartlett (1684-1721), daughter of Christopher and Deborah (Weed) Bartlett of Newbury, Massachusetts[1,5].  They had eight children, all born and recorded in Amesbury town records:

*  Benaiah Colby (1705-1746), married 1728 Mary Webster (1709-1745).
*  Joseph Colby (1707-1768), married 1736 Abigail worthen (1714-????).
*  Nathan Colby (1710-1759), married 1735 Hannah Worthen (1716-1750).
*  Judith Colby (1712-1761), married 1731 Thomas Carter (1707-1761).
*  Hannah Colby (1714-????).
*  Martha Colby (1717-????), married 1740 Joseph Kimball (1717-1763).
*  Ann Colby (1718-1799), married 1740 Moses Wells (1716-1824).

Anne (Bartlett) Colby died on 24 October 1721 in Amesbury.

Joseph Colby married, second, on 1 August 1722 in Amesbury to Mary (Philbrick) Johnson (1702-1754), the widow of James Johnson[2].  Joseph and Mary had ten children, all born and recorded in Amesbury town records:

*  Theophilus Colby (1726-1757), married 1752 Priscilla Stevens (1733-1794).

Joseph's father, John Colby (1656-1719), died intestate on 6 April 1719 in Amesbury[4].  The administration of his estate was granted to Joseph Colby, he only surviving son, on 21 April 1719.  The inventory was apprized with personal estate of about £150 and real estate of £25.  

"Mr Joseph Colby" owned the covenant and was baptized 27 June 1731 in First Amesbury church.  Mary, wife of Joseph Colby, was dismissed with others from the First Haverhill church to form the church at Hampstead 31 May 1752[1].

Joseph Colby died intestate before 14 March 1754 in Hampstead, New Hampshire, when the administration of his estate was granted[3].  No burial location has been found.

Administration of the estate of Joseph Colby of Hampstead was granted to his wife, Mary Colby, on 14 March 1754[3].

The bond of Mary Colby and her son, John Colby, with Joseph Little and Benjamin Emerson as sureties, all of Hampstead, in the sum of £1000, was posted for the administration of the estate of her husband, Joseph Colby of Hampstead on 14 March 1754.  The witnesses were Benjamin Norris and Thomas Hardy.

An inventory, signed by Ebenezer Gile, Nathaniel Heath, and Peter Eastman was taken, and amounted to £418. 16. 0, which was attested 23 May 1754.

The account of the settlement of the estate was filed by John Colby, the surviving administrator, with receipts of £418. 16. 0, ad expenditures of £445. 0. 0., was allowed 25 February 1756.
