Seavers in the News -- Obituary of Arthur F. Seaver (1894-1978) of Fort Lauderdale, Florida

 Here is this week's edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the Fort Lauderdale [Fla.] News newspaper dated Thursday, 14 December 1978, page 29, Column 1:

The transcription of the article is:

"Arthur F. Seaver, Dies: Developer, Bomber Pilot

"World War I pilot Arthur F. Seaver, who survived 21 combat missions over France while other members of his squadron only made an average of two missions, died quietly in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea on Sunday.

"Born Feb. 28, 1894, the 85-year-old Seaver was a much decorated World War I veteran who later built 75 homes in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea from 1947 to 1960.

"Seaver earned the U.S. Army and Navy Legion of Valor and the Disinguised Service Cross while serving with the 20th Aero Squadron under General John Pershing in 1917-18.

"'He flew the De Haviland DH-4 Bomber.  When he died, there were only five men from hisu nit who still survived.  He and his commanding officer each had 21 missions,' said Seaver's son, Arthur, Jr.

"Seavers World War I exploits are chronicled in the Aviation Hall of Fame at Wright-Patterson Air Force base in Dayton, Ohio, according to his son.

"Seaver is survived by his wife, dorothea, four children, seven grandchildren, snd his sister, Florence Walker of Lincoln, Neb.

"Private services have been arranged."

Arthur Freeland Seaver (1894-1978) was born 26 February 1894 in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Charles Arthur and Mary Elizabeth (Wilcox) Seaver.  He died 10 December 1978 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  He married Dorothea Hull Moore (1896-1996) on 20 July 1917 in Wellesley, Massachusetts.  They had four children:

*  Arthur Freeland Seaver (1918-2000), married 1943 Laura Margaret Phillips (c1920-????)..
*  Penelope Seaver (1919-????), married (1) 1941 Henry Gaither Fownes (1922-????), (2) 1969 Edward M. Tittmann (1906-1985)

Arthur Freeland Seaver (1894-1978) is my 8th cousin twice removed, with the common Seaver ancestor being Robert Seaver (1608-1683) who settled in Roxbury, Massachusetts.

There are over 10,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - and this is one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person does memorable things in life.  I am glad that I can honor Arthur Freeland Seaver today.

You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.
