It's Treasure Chest Thursday - an opportunity to look in my digital image files to see what treasures I can find for my family history research and genealogy musings.

The treasure today is the 1729 Marriage Allegation and Bond record of James Vaux and Amy Terrell in the Somerset Church of England parish marriage records.

The transcription of this record is (courtesy of OpenAI ChatGPT 5 for the transcription and summary) with the handwritten text in italics:

NOTE: I did the best I could to transcribe some of the words in the record - I don't know if the transcription of the Latin is correct, and some words were omitted in the transcription provided by ChatGPT.  Google Gemini was worse in general but filled in some blanks in the ChatGPT transcription.

ChatGPT also provided this summary:

What this tells us (briefly, in plain terms)
  • Date: 18 November 1729
  • Groom: James Vaux, gentleman, of S. Petherton, Somerset
  • Bride: Amy Terrell, of Stoke-sub-Hamdon, Somerset
  • Marriage location intended: Crewkerne or Stoke-sub-Hamdon parish church, Somerset
  • Purpose: A legal bond guaranteeing no lawful impediment to the marriage
  • Social status: James Vaux is explicitly styled “Generosum” (gentleman) and Amy is a "Maiden."

James Vaux (1704-1776) was born before 30 October 1704 in South Petherton, Somerset, England, the son of  William and Mary (Hare) Vaux.  Amy Terrell was born about 1708 in Stoke-sub-Hamdon, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (--?--) Terrell.  James Vaux and Amy Terrell married after 18 November 1729, probably in Stoke-sub-Hamdon.

James and Amy (Terrell) Vaux are my 6th great-grandparents, through their son John Vaux (1747-1806) who married Joanna Lavor (1763-1836) in 1785 in South Petherton, Somerset, England.
