=============================================

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, provides this list to me from a program he wrote that compares the current FamlySearch record collections list to the previous week's list.

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to   https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

Findmypast Introduces New and Improved Address Search

  I received this from Findmypast this morning:

============================================

FINDMYPAST FRIDAY

Findmypast introduce new and improved address search

· Launched in response to user feedback, this major update enables users to hunt for street names across all UK census records in one simple search

· Improved search introduces a raft of new features and paves the way for future updates

· Designed to enhance user discoveries by making it easier to locate ancestors and explore the history of a home

Leading family history website Findmypast has announced the launch of a new and improved address search designed to enhance the research of both family and house historians.

Launched in response to customer demand, the new address search covers all UK censuses from 1841 to 1911 and introduces a raft of new tools and features.

Based on feedback provided by users, it has been specifically designed to help locate missing ancestors, build a more complete picture of their lives by discovering friends, relatives and neighbours or trace the occupancy of a specific address.

Available to all via findmypast.com/search-address , the update includes the following new features:
  • Easy access: users can now access address search from the homepage menu in two simple clicks
  • Search by address across all UK censuses: whereas previously only individual censuses could be searched by address, users can now perform a single search across all 187 million records via the “select all” drop down menu
  • Set a search radius: Findmypast's new radius slider enables users to return a range of street matches from the centre of an entered location - particularly useful for long streets that span more than one location
  • Easy search edits: users can change street names and locations while viewing household results to narrow down or expand their search
  • Locate misspelt streets: street names can vary depending on how enumerators originally recorded them. To combat this, Findmypast have added a ‘spelling variants’ tick box to help users locate such addresses
  • Clearly displayed households for each street: when search results present a number of similarly spelled streets, researchers can use the total number of households listed to easily determine which street to start investigating
  • Search on mobile devices: it is now much easier to see all the information on one screen
  • View house numbers more easily: Findmypast have moved enumeration numbers to the far right of the results page to avoid confusion with house numbers - especially beneficial when scrolling on mobile
  • Access search tips: Findmypast have included tips on how to formulate a search, hacks to help dig out missing streets or houses, and recommendations for other useful resources available on the site
As well as enhancing the research of those looking to learn more about the lives of their ancestors or explore the history of their home, these improvements lay solid foundations for future updates and new features.

Findmypast will continue to seek out and act on the feedback of users to deliver the best possible experience for all. All users are invited to share their feedback on the Findmypast Forum, on social media or by contacting Findmypast's dedicated customer support team.

4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

The NEHGR article by Dale C. Kellogg and John C. Threlfall, titled "Richard Sawtell of Watertown, Mass.," contains a family sketch for Obadiah Sawtell[1].  He was the son of Richard Sawtell and Elizabeth --?-- of Watertown.

The birth date of Obadiah Sawtell is not in the Watertown records.  A date of 14 September 1648 was listed in the Lineage Book of the National Society of the Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America (page 66, published 1933) provided no source citation[1,3].

The Richard Sawtell family went to Groton, Massachusetts from Watertown in about 1662, including Obadiah, and Richard was the town clerk for several years[1].

Obadiah Sawtell was credited with service in February 1676/7 during King Philip's War for Watertown[1].

In about 1680, Obadiah Sawtell married Hannah Lawrence, the daughter of George and Elizabeth (Crispe) Lawrence of Watertown[1].  They had 13 children, all but three born, and several recorded, in Groton:

*  Nathaniel Sawtell (1681-1742), married 1710 Sarah Higginson (1682-1750).
*  Elnathan Sawtell (1683-1717), married 1709 Martha Landon (1683-1748).
*  Ephraim Sawtell (1685-1768), married (1) 1713 Abigail Farnsworth (1687-1753); (2) 1755 Hannah Farwell (1701-1762).
*  Josiah Sawtell (1687-1690).
*  Hephzabeth Sawtell (1689-1766), married 1706 Thomas Foster (1681-????).
*  Esther Sawtell (1689-1722), married 1710 Samuel Bowers (1682-1751).
*  Josiah Sawtell (1691-1752), married (1) 1713 Lydia Phelps (1688-1717); (2) Lydia Nutting (1686-1756).
*  Zachariah Sawtell (1693-1730).
*  Hannah Sawtell (1695-1749), married 1719 Stephen Holden (1691-1759).
*  Abigail Sawtell (1697-1787), married 1716 Joseph Parker (1689-1753).
*  Mary Sawtell (1699-1766), married 1718 Benjamin Parker (1691-1769).
*  Obadiah Sawtell (1701-1749), married 1721 Rachel Parker (1698-1769).
*  Hezekiah Sawtell (1703-1779), married 1723 Joanna Willson (1702-1786).

It appears that Obadiah Sawtell left Groton for a few years and went to Watertown at the outbreak of King William's War in 1689, since he is not on the Groton garrison list of 1691-2, and his children born between 1689 and 1693 are not recorded at Groton[1].

Obadiah's father, Richard Sawtell, wrote his will on 16 May 1692, and it was proved on 24 September 1694 at the Middlesex County Probate Court in Charlestown[2].  In his will, he bequeathed to Obadiah:
"And unto my son Obadiah Sawtell I bequeath all the said Lands in Groton & ye appertenances thereof excepting only so much as perhaps is sould for his mothers support as is above said.  And my will is that he shall pay my Legacies as followeth, namely to my son John Sawtell & to my daughters Bethia Sawtell Hanna Win & Ruth Hues to each of them ten pounds in mony if he be able or in that what is equivalent to mony as for my son Jonathan deceased I did for him in his life time what I judged meet (and more too) But yert unto his children I bequeath the moity of one shilling apece.  And to my son Zacariahs children & to my daughter Starlings the moity of one shilling apeece if they desire it or to any other that can justly claim any of mine estate.  All these Legacies my will is yt they shall be payd by my son Obadiah above said within the compas of six years after ye decease of my Loving wife his mother or sooner if he can.  But if it shall please God that I shall survive my wife, then within the compas of six years after my decease this my will shall be performed & confirmed to every person conserned therein in every particular as is above in ye severall lines expressed excepting only my movables estate conserning wh my will is that it shall be devided among my children to every one a like share by valuation by such as may be called thereunto.

"And if my son Obadiah should by God's providence be totally & forever to be despossest & disinherited of ye said Lands in Groton by ye Enimy Indians or others, whereby he is disenabled to pay the said Legacies then what he hath not payd of them shall be null & voyd."
Obadiah and his brother Enoch were named as executors of their father's will.

Obadiah "Sawtle" was chosen by the town to be a Groton constable on 5 March 1694[1].

The Middlesex County Land Records have no entries for Obadiah buying land in Groton, but there are a number of deeds for Obadiah selling land between 1702 and 1738, and some have Hannah's name on them up until at least 1726.  Several of the deeds were for land given to his sons.

His wife, Hannah (Lawrence) Sawtell, died some time after 1726, but there is no death record or burial location.

Obadiah Sawtell died on 20 March 1740 in his 92nd year, according to his tombstone in the old cemetery at Groton[3-4].  The "Death's Head" slate headstone was in excellent condition in 1972[3].  It reads:

"Here Lies The Body
of Mr. Obadiah
Sawtell Who Departed
This Life March The 20th
A D 1740 in ye 92d
Year of his Age."

Obadiah Sawtell did not leave a probate record in Middlesex County, Massachusetts.

Seavers in the News -- Ernest M. Seaver Dies in Vermont in 1951

  It's time for another edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from The Burlington [Vt.] Free Press newspaper dated 21 July 1951:

The transcription of the article is:

"ERNEST M. SEAVER

"WASHINGTON, July 20 -- Ernest Merrill Seaver, 78, native of Williamstown and long-time resident of Washington, died at Barre City Hospital at 7:20 this morning.  He had been in ill health and a patient at the hospital for about five weeks.

"Born in Williamstown Dec. 31, 1872, he was the son of Stillman and Zeruah (Wills) Seaver.  For about 16 years he was employed by the Flint Lumber Co.  In his later years he worked for himself as an electrician and carpenter.

"At the time of his death he was a trustee and treasurer of the Calef Memorial Library in Washington.

"On Oct. 31, 1899, he married Mabel I. Jeffords of Washington.  She survives him, as do a son, Lawrence H. Seaver of Barre; two grandchildren, Roy Seaver, USMC, Parris Island, S.C., and Anne Seaver of Barre; and several cousins."

The source citation is:

"Ernest M. Seaver," The Burlington [Vt.] Free Press newspaper, obituary, Saturday, 21 July 1951, page 2, column 1, Ernest M. Seaver obituary;  Newspapers.com   (https://www.newspapers.com : accessed 22 April 2021).

This obituary provides a name, an age, a birth date and place, a death date and place, a marriage date and place, and the names of his wife, child, and grandchildren, plus a limited description of his work history.

Ernest Merrill Seaver was born 31 December 1872 in Williamstown, Vermont, the son of Stillman and Zerviah (Wills) Seaver.  He died 20 July 1951 in Barre, Vermont.  He married Mabel Isabel Jeffords  (1879-1978) on 31 October 1899 in Williamstown, Vermont.  They had one child:

*  Lawrence Hubert Seaver (1904-1989), married 1928 Marjorie May Bowen (1901-1971).

I am a 7th cousin three times removed to Ernest Merrill Seaver, with the common Seaver ancestor being robert Seaver (1608-1683), who settled in Roxbury, Massachusetts in 1634.

There are over 10,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person has a long life and a smaller family. I am glad that I can honor Ernest Merrill Seaver today.

You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.

Treasure Chest Thursday -- 1740 Death Record of Obadiah Sawtell (1648-1740) in Groton, Massachusetts

It's Treasure Chest Thursday - a chance to look in my digital image files to see what treasures I can find for my family history and genealogy musings.

The treasure today is the 1740 death entry for Obadiah Sawtell in the Groton, Massachusetts town vital record book:
The death entry is near the m iddle of the page:

The death record transcription for Obadiah Sawtell is:

"[SAWTELL] Obidiah, Mar. 20, 1740, in his 92d y. G.R.2"

  The source citation for this record is:

Vital Records of Groton, Massachusetts to the End of the Year 1849 (Salem, Mass. : The Essex Institute, 1926-1927), Two volumes, Deaths, page 264, Obidiah Sawtell entry, 20 March 1740, in 92nd year.

This is an entry in a transcribed and alphabetized vital record book for Groton, Massachusetts, so it is a Derivative Source with Primary Information and Direct Evidence of the death of Obidiah Sawtell according to his  gravestone.

Obadiah Sawtell was born in Watertown, Massachusetts, the son of Richard and Elizabeth (--?--) Sawtell.  He married Hannah Lawrence (1662-1707), daughter of George and Elizabeth (Crispe) Lawrence of Watertown, i about 1680.  Obadiah and Hannah (Lawrence) Sawtell had 3 children, all probably born in Groton.

Obadiah and Hannah (Lawrence) Sawtell are my 7th great-grandparents, through their son Hezekiah Sawtell (1703-1779), who married Joanna Willson (1701-1786) in 1723 in Groton, Massachusetts.

Review: "Genealogy at a Glance: Ontario, Canada Genealogy Research," by Lorine McGinnis Schulze

  The Genealogical Publishing Company in Baltimore has published another in its series of "Genealogy at a Glance" laminated research guides - this time for  Ontario, Canada, Genealogy Research, by Lorine McGinnis Schulze.

This "Genealogy at a Glance" booklet has four laminated pages on one 11" x 17" paper (folded). It is designed to give the user the basic elements of genealogy research in the allotted space. They provide an overview of the facts a researcher needs to know in order to begin and proceed successfully with research in the subject.

The description of the
Ontario, Canada, Genealogy Research  booklet includes:

Ontario, Canada’s most populous province, was a wilderness until 1782, when thousands of Loyalists from the United States—fleeing the colonies after the American Revolution—settled along the shores of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. They were soon joined by Swiss Mennonites from Pennsylvania, and in the 19th century by emigrants from Great Britain, Ireland, Germany, France, and other European countries.

Following the format of the other publications in our “At a Glance” series, this guide—in only four, laminated pages—gives you all the information you will need to begin tracing these Ontario, Canada, ancestors. Topics covered include immigration and settlement history; ships’ passenger lists; naturalization records; Loyalists; and census, vital, church, and land records. Throughout the guide are informative tips and numerous online and print resources that will help further your research.

In short, Genealogy at a Glance: Ontario, Canada, Genealogy Research highlights all the basic elements of Ontario family history research in an easy-to-use format, allowing you to grasp the fundamentals of Ontario genealogy “at a glance.”

The booklet has these sections:
  • Contents
  • Key Dates & Name Changes
  • Immigration and Settlement
  • Ships Passenger Lists
  • Naturalization Records
  • Loyalists
  • Census Records
  • Vital Records
  • Church Records
  • Land Records
  • Other Online Resources
This booklet is designed primarily for the researcher who has little experience and understanding of Ontario Genealogy Research and provides an overview of the basics of finding Ontario genealogy resources.

For someone like me that teaches and talks about genealogy a bit, it is invaluable because I can pull it out and provide some guidance to my student or colleague interested in the subject.

The beauty of these "Genealogy at a Glance" booklets is that they are very light and portable in a briefcase or laptop case. They are fixtures in my research case.

This four-page laminated booklet costs $9.95,  plus postage and handling. You can order it through the Genealogical Store, or use the link for the
Ontario, Canada, Genealogy Research booklet and click on the "Add to Cart" link.  I recommend buying these booklets at seminars and conferences where they are offered in order to avoid the shipping costs.

My Maternal Grandparents and Great-Grandparent in 1932 -- Post 665 of (Not So) Wordless Wednesday

 I can't help it, I can't do a wordless post! This is one of my favorite colorized photographs:

This photograph is from about 1932, and the setting is the backyard of my grandparents home in San Diego at 2130 Fern Street.  From the left, the people are:

*  Emily Kemp (Auble) Carringer (1899-1977), my maternal grandmother

*  Lyle Lawrence Carringer (1891-1976), my maternal grandfather.

*  Georgianna (Kemp) Auble (1868-1952), my great-grandmother.

They had a greenhouse in their back yard and grew flowers and fruit and vegetables year round.  It had fountains and fish ponds and was a wonderful playground for me as a young child.

I wish my mother had been in this photograph to give it a three-generation look.  Perhaps she took the photograph.  They are all dressed up for some event - perhaps Easter or Mother's Day.

This photograph was originally black-and-white and I colorized it and enhanced using the MyHeritage InColor photo tools.  I am pretty sure that Emily's dress was not that color!
