Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Pauleen's Crazy Month of May Pandemic Meme, Part II

It's Saturday Night -

time for more Genealogy Fun!

Your mission, should you decide to accept it (cue the Mission Impossible music here) is to:

1)  Check out Pauleen Cass's blog post, Crazy Month of May 2020 Meme: Pandemic Experiences.  We did the first 10 prompts last week.

2)  Let's do the last 11 of the prompts this week.

3)  Tell us about your own pandemic experience in your own blog post, in a comment to this blog post, or in a post on Facebook.  Be sure to leave a link to your work as a Comment to this post and also on Pauleen's post.

4)  Thank you, Pauleen!!

Here's mine:

11)  What have you found to be the strangest change to your life?

I think the strangest change is the almost total lack of personal interaction with anybody but my wife.  We rarely see the neighbors.  We aren't going to church.  Everyone wears a mask which limits concersation, and you can't see facial expressions.

12)  Have you found the changes and experience stressful/anxious/worrying?

The isolation and lack of interaction has not been stressful, anxious or worrying.  What is worrisome is that the protests and violence and anti-tradition voices have drowned out rational voices.

13)  How have the closures affected your local community?

The closures have shut down many businesses, and reduced employment, in our community.  Some will probably not reopen.  Prices will be higher.

14) Have in-person meetings been replaced with virtual meetings via Zoom, Skype etc?

Yes. I was using Zoom several times a week before the shutdown, and started doing Zoom meetings with my Chula Vista society colleagues 4 times a month, and with my San Diego society colleagues 4 times a month, and with DearMYRTLE almost every day with her Mini-Myrt sessions.  At least you can see their faces and hear their voices.  I had a phone meeting with my doctor, and several meetings with my financial advisors.  I talk to my daughters on the phone several times a week too.  We watch the church services on YouTube on Sundays.

15)  Do you enjoy the virtual meeting format?

I do enjoy the format.  With the virtual meetings, I don't feel as isolated in the genealogy world.

16)  Are you working from home instead of in your usual place of work?

Having been retired for 18 years, I work from home on my genealogy and whatever else interests me.  I'm in my usual place of work.  I am doing more hours than I was before because we have limited our shopping days and travel around town.  Also, there have not been Padres baseball games to watch on TV or in person.

17)  Have your habits changed over the past months?

Except for trying to sleep in until after 7 a.m., not really.  I am not taking Linda to the pool at 7 a.m., so that lets me sleep in a bit.  We are eating the same food.  We watch the same TV programs, and go to bed about the same time.  We used to go out to dinner every two or three weeks, but have been to In 'n' Out drive through two times in 3 months, and Tami brought takeout Mexican food to us once.

18)  Have you had to cancel travel plans for pleasure or family?

Oh yes!  We had to cancel our 50th wedding anniversary on March 21.  We were going to stay at a ritzy hotel the weekend before our anniversary.  We haven't gone to our daughters' homes to visit.  We

19)  Do you think you’ll be able to travel in 2020?

Maybe at Thanksgiving and Christmas time to visit the daughters' homes.  We are still sheltering in place because we are susceptible to the virus.

20)  Have you/others been wearing masks when out and about in your area?

Only when we go out in public - to the grocery store or the doctor's office.  Almost everybody wears masks at the grocery store and everybody wore masks at the health center.

21)  Will you change your lifestyle after this experience?

To some extent.  We won't go out to eat very often, other than drive through.

Your comment about not eating out in the future is similar to my family. Also, we loved to go on cruises, but between the idea of being on lock down in a small inside cabin sailing in circles around the ocean and all the new safety features being considered, cruises don't sound like much fun anymore. They might be needed, but won't contribute much to a fun, relaxing vacation. We will be homebodies for the foreseeable future, given that we are in the age bracket to be at risk.

It’s interesting Randy that we despite coping with the changes we’ve all actually made quite a lot of adjustments. The other big difference from here is that very very few people are wearing masks, largely I suppose because of our well-contained (touch wood!) infection rate. I’m so sorry you missed having the chance to celebrate your 50th....we were so lucky to get our family gathering and celebratory travel done before the crisis took over.

The main thing is that you and Linda are safe and stay well.
