52 Relatives: Effie Eva Carringer (1858-1874) of Pennsylvania, Iowa, and Colorado

 I have posted over 500 genealogical sketches of  my ancestors back through the 7th great-grandparents - see the list in 52 Ancestors Biographies.

This "52 Relatives" theme is a weekly series to document the lives of siblings of my ancestors with relatively short genealogical sketches, including important events, and with source citations.  These relatives lived and died within a family structure, and deserve a genealogical sketch - they were integral parts and important persons in the lives of my ancestral families.  I will post the sketches on my Ancestry Member Tree and in the FamilySearch Family Tree.

 =================================

Effie Eva Carringer was born 24 November 1858 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, the daughter  of David Jackson and Rebecca (Spangler) Carringer.[1-2]  She was the youngest child of D.J. and Rebecca; her brother Harvey Edgar Carringer was born in 1852, and her brother Henry Austin Carringer was born in 1853.

The family moved to Columbus City, Louisa County, Iowa before 1860.

In the 1860 United States census, this family resided in Columbus City, Louisa County, Iowa.  The family included:[3]
  • David J. Caringer -- age 31, male, carpenter, $200 in real property, $100 in personal property, born PA
  • Rebecca Caringer -- age 28, female, born PA
  • Harvy E. Caringer -- age 9, male, born PA, attended school
  • Henry A. Caringer -- age 7, male, born PA, attended school
  • Epha E. Caringer -- age 2, female, born PA
In the 1870 United States census, this family resided in Jackson township in Washington County, Iowa. The household, indexed as Carenngtr on Ancestry.com, included:[4]
  •  D. Carenngtr -- age 40, male, white, farmer, born PA
  • Rebeca Carenngtr -- age 38, female, white, keeps house, born PA
  • Harvy Carenngtr -- age 18, male, white, school, born PA
  • Henry A. Carenngtr -- age 16, male, white, school, born PA
  • Effie Carenngtr -- age ??, female, white, school, born PA
After losing their home in Washington County, Iowa to foreclosure in 1873, the David J. Carringer family moved to Caribou, Boulder County, Colorado.

Another tragedy soon befell the family:  Effie Eva Carringer died on 8 June 1874 in Caribou, Colorado, at the age of 15 years, 6 months and 12 days.  An obituary was found in the Carringer family papers, saying:
"The deeply afflicted family have the sincerest sympathy of all the community.  The form of their loved one fades from earth 'but a fair maiden in the Father's mansion, clothed with celestial grace, and beautiful will all the soul's expansion, shall they behold her face.' "
She is buried in Columbia Cemetery in nearby Boulder, Colorado.[2].  The gravestone is inscribed as:

"Effie E.
Daughter of
D.J. and Rebecca
Carringer
Died at Caribou
June 8, 1874
Aged
15 Years
6 M. 12 D.

"but a fair maiden in the Father's mansion,

and beautiful with all the soul's expansion,

The quotation in the obituary and on he gravestone are from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem, Resignation.

====================================

Effie Eva Carringer (1858-1874) was my great-grand-aunt, the sister of my maternal great-grandfather, Henry Austin Carringer (1853-1946).  I can't imagine the pain and anguish that my great-grandparents suffered by the loss of their only daughter at the age of 15.
