Genealogy Pot-Pourri - Week Ending 12 May 2024

Here are the highlights of my family history and genealogy related activities over the past week.

1)  Hosted and moderated the Chula Vista Genealogical Society (CVGS) Research Meeting on Zoom on Wednesday.  Reported on the MyHeritage NYC collections, more collections on FamilySearch Full-Text Search, mining Ancestry hints, and my WikiTree challenge.  My power went out but the attendees continued on until I could get back 40 minutes later.

2)  Attended the San Diego Genealogical Society (SDGS) monthly Program meeting.  Lisa Medina presenting  "Introduction to Mexican Genealogy Research" and "Researching Alta California Ancestors: Key Records and Repositories in Southern California."

3)  Presented "Randy's Top 10 Genealogy Search Tips" to the Genealogical Society of San Cruz County (GSSCC) on Tuesday.

4)  Participated in Mondays With Myrt on Monday (6 May).  We discussed Vivid-Pix with Rick voight, ethical issues about presentation evaluations, Norweginan terms with Liv, Kenneth Marks' The Ancestor Hunt, Roberta Estes' new book, and Crista Cowan's new podcast.

5)  Participated in one WikiTree challenge meeting where I and my cousin connections were the target, er, subject.  Tried to keep up with the profiles added to, or edited on, WikiTree, and adding content as needed to my RootsMagic tree.  The Reveal meeting is this week on Thursday.

6)  Transcribed the 1893 will of Alonzo C. Seaver (1852-1893) of Cook County, Illinois for the  Amanuensis Monday theme.

7)  Wrote a genealogical sketch for my great-granduncle Harvey Edgar Carringer (1852-1946) of Pennsylvaia, Iowa, Colorado and California for 52 Relatives theme.

8)  The latest "Memories" blog post was What We Did On Our 2006 New England Summer Vacation.

9)  My famous cousin this past week was 9th Cousin 1x Removed Roy Orbison (1936-1988), the Famous Singer, Songwriter and Musician.

10)  AncestryDNA now has 45,888 DNA matches (up 61 from 5 May) with 1949 "close" matches for me today, with 1 new ThruLines.  I added Notes to 2 new Matches.  MyHeritageDNA now has 12,521 DNA matches (up 20 from 5 May) for me.  Reviewed the new DNA matches on AncestryDNA, MyHeritageDNA, FamilyTreeDNA and 23andMe.

11)  Occasionally matched RootsMagic 9 profiles to FamilySearch Family Tree.  I have matched 51,215 of my RootsMagic persons with FamilySearch Family Tree profiles (up 20).

12) Used Web Hints and Record Matches from Ancestry, MyHeritage, Findmypast and FamilySearch to add content and source citations to my RootsMagic profiles. I now have 72,879 persons in my RootsMagic family tree (up 37), and 146,856 source citations (up 11).  Resolved 304 Ancestry Hints. TreeShared 177 new and updated profiles with my Ancestry tree.  My Ancestry Member Tree has Ancestry Record Hints with 17,510 to be resolved, but I work on them several times a week.

13) Wrote 16 Genea-Musings blog posts last week (Sunday through Saturday), of which one was a press release. The most viewed post last week was
Memories - What We Did On Our 2006 New England Summer Vacation with over 136 views.  Genea-Musings had about 46,100 page views last week and over 169,000 views for the past month.

14)  Real life:  I visited Linda almost every day at the skilled nursing/memory care facility and we played Uno.   Talked to the girls on Mother's Day. Finished reading  Jonathan Kellerman's The Wedding Guest.  My Padres went 4-2 this week and are 22-21 on the season.
