Randy's Genealogy Pot-Pourri - Week Ending 26 January 2025

Here are the highlights of my family history and genealogy related activities over the past week (ending Sunday, 26 January 2025).

1)  Hosted and moderated the CVGS DNA Interest Group meeting on Wednesday with 19 in attendance.  Reported on RootsTech 2025, AncestryDNA tools, Diahan Southard's newsletter, Dana Leeds videos, and the SDGS DNA study group, plus my own work  - not much news this past month!   The group shared recent experiences using DNA results.

2)  Watched one Family Tree Webinar - Andrew Redfern's "10 Practical Uses of AI in Family History" - and Episode 22 of Steve and Mark's The AI Family History Show.

3)  Transcribed the 1892 Deed of Alexander and Elizabeth Sovereen to Frederick H. Crabb for Land in Norfolk County, Ontario for the Amanuensis Monday theme.

4)  Wrote a genealogical sketch for my 2nd Great-GrandAunt Elizabeth (Richman) Hogan (1811-1897) of Hilperton, Wiltshire for the 52 Relatives theme.

7)  Requested free AI tools to create a poem and song lyrics for my 2nd great-grandfather, David Jackson "DJ" CVarringer (1828-1902), and had Suno.com create a song using the lyrics.  I posted the poem created by Grok 2, the song lyrics created by Perplexity, and the Suno song MP4, in "DJ's Journey" -- A Family History Poem and Song Created by Artificial Intelligence.

8)  My AncestryDNA now has 47,900 DNA matches (up 105 from 19 January) with 2030 "close" matches today (up 5), with 3 new ThruLines.  I added Notes to 3 Matches, and added 3 new DNA match lines to RootsMagic.   MyHeritageDNA now has 13,195 DNA matches (up 19 from 19  January) for me.  Reviewed the new DNA matches on AncestryDNA, MyHeritageDNA, FamilyTreeDNA and 23andMe.

9)  Occasionally matched RootsMagic 10 profiles to FamilySearch Family Tree.  I have matched 52,271 of my RootsMagic persons with FamilySearch Family Tree profiles (up 13).

10)  Searched for more records of ancestral families on Ancestry, FamilySearch and MyHeritage, downloaded record images to my digital file folders, and added research notes, events and sources to RootsMagic profiles.  My RootsMagic family tree now has 74,040 profiles (up 19 from last week) and 147,347 source citations (up 2).  Added more short biographical sketches to ancestors and edited historical place names for a number of families.

11) Wrote 20 Genea-Musings blog posts last week (Sunday through Saturday), of which three were a press release. The most viewed post last week was "The Family Tree Blues" - A Genealogist's Poem and Song Created by Artificial Intelligence with over 283 views.  Genea-Musings had about 172,000 page views last week and over 355,000 views over the past month.

12)  Real life events:  Visited Linda several days at her memory care facility and we played Uno.  Went to the grocery store on Monday and Friday.  Brother-in-law Paul and his wife Deb visited Linda on Sunday and Monday, and daughter Tami's family came down on Monday.  We went to lunch at Lolita's and dinner at Panera on Monday.  I'm finished reading Killing Floor by Lee Child and started Rooster Bar by John Grisham.  My SDSU Aztecs were 2-0 in basketball, so now 13-5.  Watched the College championship game on Monday and the NFL conference championship games on Sunday.  We had a potential fire threat east of us on Monday, and a wind shift and rain over the weekend to squelch the threat.
