Amanuensis Monday - Post 272: 1785 Deed of Silvanus White to Jonathan White in Bristol County, Mass.

Genea-blogger John Newmark (who writes the excellent  TransylvanianDutch blog) started a Monday blog theme years ago called "Amanuensis Monday."  John offers this definition for "amanuensis:" 

"A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another."

The subject today is the 1785 deed of Silvanus White of Dartmouth, Bristol County,  Massachusetts granting land to Jonathan White in Dartmouth, Massachusetts.


The transcription of this deed (the top deed on the right-hand page) is:

Know all men by these presents that I Silvanus White of Dartmouth in
the County of Bristol in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Hatter, In
consideration of Ninty Spanish Milled Dollars in Hand paid to me by
Jonathan White Blacksmith of Dartmouth aforesd Blacksmith, the
receipt of which I do hereby acknowlidge. I do hereby give grant convey
& confirm unto him the said Jonathan White & to his heirs & assigns
forever, A Certain Tract or Lot of Wood Land situate lying & being in
Dartmouth aforesd Containing Ten Acres by measure and is Bounded
Southerly on the Highway, Westerly on Stephen Cornell's Land, Northerly
on Anthony Tripp's Land, Easterly on the remainder of my Land, and is
to be an equal width acrost the Lot at each End.

To have and to hold the same with all the prevelidges & appurtenances
thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining unto him the said
Jonathan White & to his heirs & assigns forever, and I do covenant with
the said Jonathan White his heirs & assigns that I am Lawfully seized of
the premises in fee simple, that they are free of all incumbrances
that I have good right full power & Lawfull authority to Sell & Convey
the same in manner as aforesd and that I will Warrant Secure
& defend the same unto him the said Jonathan White & to his heirs &
assigns forever against the lawfull claim & demands of all persons.

In Witness whereof I have hereunto Set my hand & seal this seventh
Day of the month called December AD one thousand Seven hundred
& Eighty Five, 1785.

This deed grants ten acres of land in Dartmouth from Silvanus White to Jonathan White, blacksmith of Dartmouth, for ninety Spanish milled dollars.  

Jonathan White (1732-1804) is my fifth great-grandfather, married to Abigail Wing (1734-1806), and they are parents of my 4th great-grandfather, Humphrey White (1757-1814).
