Treasure Chest Tuesday -- 1879 Death Notice for John C. Paul (1824-1879) in San Francisco, Calif.

This week's Tuesday treasure is the 1879 death notice for John C. Paul (1824-1879) in the San Francisco [Calif.] Chronicle newspaper dated 3 June 1879 on page 4:

The transcription of this death notice is:

"PAUL -- In this city, May 31, John C. Paul, a native of St. Johns, New Brunswick, aged 55 years and 7 months.

"Friends and acquaintances are respectfully invited to attend the funeral this day (Tuesday) at 2 o'clock P.M. from No. 28 Clara street."

The source citation for this record is:

"San Francisco Chronicle," online database with digital images, SFGenealogy (www.SFGenealogy.com), citing original documents at San Francisco Public Library, San Francisco, Calif., John C. Paul death notice, 3 June 1879, page 4.

This record provides a clue to John Paul's birth month - perhaps it is about November 1823.  That comports closely with the age at marriage in 1852 (age 28) and the 1860 U.S. census (age 36), but not with the 1870 U.S. census (age 43).  It also provides a clue as to the residence of the Paul family at this time.  28 Clara Street is in the South of Market area of San Francisco, one block north on 4th from Harrison Street.

John Charles and Maria T. (Beamish) Paul are Linda's second great-grandparents through their daughter, Mary Ann Paul (1854-1908) who married Herman Schaffner (1854-1921) in about 1876.
