Monday Genea-Pourri - Week Ending 14 September 2020

Here are the highlights of my family history and genealogy related activities over the past week:

1)  Hosted the Chula Vista Genealogical Society Research Hroup Meeting on Wednesday on Zoom with 20 in attendance.  We discussed the CVGS program on 9/30, the SDGS seminar on 9/19, RootsTech 2021, webinar and video learning opportunities, Writing down your family stories, and writing life sketches of your ancestors. In the second hour, we discussed genealogy software, ordering certificates, deleting an Ancestry tree, getting data from old FTM disks, and getting tree information from relatives.

2)  Participated in Mondays With Myrt today.  We discussed Liv's 1905 family photo, using social media to find relatives and photos, my Kemp siblings photo, AncestryDNA ethnicity estimates, the Genealogical speakers Guild, online society presentations, and the upcoming Nordic Conference in Washington.

3)  Watched one Family Tree Webinar -- New Searching Experience at MyHeritage by Dana Drutman.

4)  Wrote and posted a biographical sketch of 7th great-grandmother #557 Mehitable Hartshorn (1683-1771) for my 52 Ancestors biographical sketch on Friday.

5)  Transcribed the 1728 Bond and Decree for Distribution  for the estate of John Fisher (1652-1727) of Medfield, Mass.  for Amanuensis Monday.  The real estate totaled £213, and was awarded to a son who paid money to his siblings..

6)  Added three AncestryDNA ThruLines to my RootsMagic tree, and added Notes to 10 more AncestryDNA matches with cM values, relationships and known common ancestors.  Ancestry added 102 new DNA matches this past week, and also changed their ethnicity estimate - somehow I am more "Scottish" now.  MyHeritage added 27 new DNA matches.    Reviewed new DNA matches on AncestryDNA, MyHeritageDNA, FamilyTreeDNA and 23andMe.

7)  There were several sessions working in the RootsMagic software program to match with and update FamilySearch Family Tree profiles for Seaver families and my ancestral families, with occasional additions to the RootsMagic profiles. I have matched 37,495 of my RootsMagic persons with FamilySearch Family Tree profiles (up 166).

8)  Used Web Hints and Record Matches from Ancestry, MyHeritage, Findmypast and FamilySearch to add content and sources to my RootsMagic profiles.  I now have 58,950 persons in my RootsMagic file (up 113), and 126,185 source citations (up 166).   I TreeShared with my Ancestry Member Tree twice this week updating 200 profiles, and I resolved 696 Ancestry Hints.  I've fallen behind on the Ancestry Record Hints with 133,958 to be resolved, but I work on them almost daily.

9)  Wrote 17 Genea-Musings blog posts last week, of which one was a press release.  The most popular post last week was I Received My New AncestryDNA Ethnicity Estimate with over 309 views.

10)  We are still fine here at the Genea-cave, hunkered down and not going out much.  I went to the grocery store on Monday and Friday, and it wasn't too busy.  Other than that, it was stay-at-home on the computer doing genealogy, eating, sleeping and a little yard work, watching the Padres games, and reading a Catherine Coulter mystery book.  My Padres are now 31-17 and should make the playoffs.

Hi Randy-

This mentions your efforts to match with and update FamilySearch Family Tree profiles. You've probably blogged about this in the past, but there were too many "FamilySearch" posts for me to find that to see what your process is to accomplish that. Does part of that involve "cleaning up" duplicates, mistakes, etc?

I'm also wondering if you use the "Watch" function on FamilySearch to get notified about changes. I am doing that for my direct ancestors and I find it takes an hour or two a week to review and often correct mistakes and issues, usually from merges, etc. Particularly merges from MyHeritage Family Trees that sometimes don't seem to be as well documented as Ancestry trees.

Thanks for any perspective you can share on this.
