Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- RootsTech!!

It's Saturday Night -

time for more Genealogy Fun!

Your mission, should you decide to accept it (cue the Mission Impossible music here) is to:

1)  Have you gone to Rootstech? If so which years?

2)  Describe your experience.

3)  Who was your favorite speaker?

4)  Did you talk with any genealogy "rock stars"?

5)  What was something you learned that you use over and over?

6)  Describe something you enjoyed in the vendor area.

7)  Do you watch the streamed classes live?

8)  Did you visit the Family History Library?  Describe your experience.

9)  What was your favorite Salt Lake City experience not genealogical related? (A restaurant, a landmark etc.)

10)  What was a pleasant surprise about your visit that you did not expect?

My thanks to reader Jacquie Schattner for creating this list of questions!!

My responses:

1)  I have been to 8 of the 10 RootsTech conferences to date - 2012 through 2018, and 2020.

2)  I usually hang out in the Media Hub in the Expo Hall and blog, or talk to friends and colleagues, and wander around talking to vendors.  I don't attend many classes.  Before 2019, the classes were a challenge to get into.

3)  My favorite speaker was probably Jay Verkler of FamilySearch in 2012.  I wrote about that earlier this week.

4)  I know many genealogy "rock stars" and talk to many every time I'm at RootsTech.  This week it's Blaine Bettinger, David Lambert, Roberta Estes, Marian Pierre-Louis, DearMYRTLE, Cousin Russ and many more.  My "rock star" criteria may vary from yours!

5)  Hard to say what I've used over and over.  Showing RootsTech photos on my blog and on Facebook?

6)  In the Vendor area, I enjoy talking to companies sith new products and get demonstration of their products.

7)  I watch the live stream classes at home during the conference if I am not there in person, and watch them after the conference at home if I attended RootsTech.

8)  Every year until this year I have gone to the FHL to do research a day before the conference.  I didn't this year because of my limited time here.  In past years, I made a to-do list, concentrated on microfilm only collections not available from home, downloaded images to my flash drive, and worked through them at home.  This year, I did go to the FamilySearch reception on Thursday night at the FHL which was great - met a lot of  famous people there.

9)  The most pleasant experience - genealogy or not - is the DearMYRTLE After Party at her home with 30 to 40 other genea-bloggers and friends.  This is always fun and has been a bonding experience for all of us.

10)  The biggest surprise was last night - at the Geneabloggers Photo opportunity, I was awarded the second "Geneabloggers Lifetime Achievement Award" by the GeneaBloggers organization.  Also a lifetime membership in the GeneaBloggers organization.  I was almost speechless... but prattled a bit.  Thank you, GeneaBloggers.

I'm glad I blogged about previous RootsTechs when I went, because I was able to read back over what I've written to help me with some of the answers!
