MyHeritage Enhances the Historical Search Record Experience

The MyHeritage Blog has published Enhancements to the Historical Record Search Experience on MyHeritage today (11 September 2024).

There are two major changes to the search experience on MyHeritage:

1)  The user can now "Refine by Record Type" on the Search Result page, after performing the search on the "Research" tab > "Search all records" tab.  On the Search Result Page, the user can now choose between:

  • All records
  • Historical Records
  • Family Trees
Here is the "Search all records" tab.  I input Isaac and Seaver and 1823 and Massachusetts in the four basic search fields.  i assumed that all entries were not exact.  I can choose to make them Exact by clicking within the search field.

I clicked the orange "Search" button on received my Search Results:

The search system defaults to the "All records" button at the top left of the page under "Refine by Record Type."  There are 1,890 search results for Isaac - 363 of them are results from the many family trees on MyHeritage, including the FamilySearch Family Tree, Geni.com, and Filae family tree collections.

I clicked the "Historical records" button and now have 1,527 in that record type:

I can use the "Narrow by Category" filter on the left of the screen to see the matches in one of the categories, say "Birth, Marriage & Death":

I have only 35 search results in that category.  Not all of them are for "my" Isaac Seaver, born in 1823 in Masssachusetts.

I can reduce the number of matches by making some of the search fields "Exact" rather than "Not Exact." I made all of the search fields "Exact" and there were 4 matches for "my" Isaac.  But it missed all of the census records.

2)  The second new feature is a box showing the "Your recent searches" below the Search boxes on the "Search Historical Records" page:

You can see that my search for "Isaac Seaver 1823" appears.  When I click on that, it shows me the "Search results" page with the "All records"  button results.

I'm glad that MyHeritage has taken these steps to improve their search capability.  Both new features are worthwhile.

Disclosure: I receive a complimentary subscription to MyHeritage, and gave received other material consideration in past years. I uploaded my autosomal DNA raw data to their DNA product. This does not affect my objective analysis of MyHeritage products.
