The "Where I'm From" Poem (for SNGF) Compendium

We had a very successful Saturday Night Genealogy Fun meme this past weekend, with many genea-bloggers writing a poem based on the "Where I'm From" template at http://www.swva.net/fred1st/wif.htm.

I was impressed by the number of entries and the depth of thoughts and emotions expressed in these poems, and wanted to honor the contributors.  also, I hope that my readers will read these poems, and enjoy them, and will write one of their own for their descendants to enjoy.

Top 60 Most Viewed Posts in 2025 on Genea-Musings

A) Here are the Top 60 Genea-Musings blog posts written in 2025 that had the most page views in 2025 (from View Count statistics on the Google Blogger Posts page as of 30 December 2025):

Why 60?  Because it's a nice round number!  And I wanted to include a few more than last year (my blog, my choice!). Note that I did not include any of the "regular" posts that might have more than 584 views - there were several Best of the Genea-Blogs and Ancestry Database poststhat would be in the Top 60 above if I had included them.

This certainly was an AI year - 36 of the top 60 were about testing or using Artificial Intelligence. 

B)  The ten most popular Genea-Musings posts since 2007 (per Google Blogger) are:

1)  1940 Census Enumeration District Maps Online at NARA Website (posted 18 July 2011) - 88,600 views.
4)  Genealogy Presentations on Slideshare.net (posted 28 January 2010) - 26,000 views.
5)  World records for number of children (posted 21 July 2006) - 23,900 views.
6)  Dear Ancestry.com: Are You Fixing These Problems? (17 January 2019) - 17,800 views
7)  Merry Christmas to All! (posted 25 December 2011) - 15,000 views.
8)  Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Your 16 Great-Great-Grands  (8 August 2009) - 11,200 views
9)  Was Daniel Boone an Ancestor of Pat Boone? (31 August 2007) - 10,200 views
10) Randy's NGS 2010 Photos - Post 1 (4 May 2010) - 9,600 views

Several of those "all-time" posts had more page views in 2025 than all but #1 on my Top 60 list.

C)  Of course, all of my blog posts are viewed by more readers than those that go to the specific web page for the post, which is what Google counts - those who read them on a Genea-Musings archive page, those that read them in an RSS reader, or on a mobile device.  In July 2022, Feedburner stopped their daily email service to subscribers, and I have switched a daily email to www.Blogtrottr.com but it doesn't provide reader counts.

D)  Previous "most popular" posts on Genea-Musings are:


E)  Readership of Genea-Musings went up significantly over the past year.  For example, the 10th most viewed post in 2025 had 940 views, the 20th most viewed post had 777 views, the 30th had 703 views, the 40th had 673 views, and the 50th had 622 views. In 2024, the 10th most viewed post had 572 views, the 20th had 482 views, the 30th had 427 views, the 40th had 377 views, and the 50th had 341 views.

Genea-Musings had about 7.77 million page views according to Google during 2025, and about 29.4 million page views since 2007.  In 2024, Genea-Musings had about 6.0 million page views, so the effect of all my efforts was about a 129% increase in page views for 2025.   Why?  Probably because of AI posts.  

I wrote about 1,110 blog posts in 2025, compared to over 970 for 2024, and over 900 for most years since 2007. Almost all of that increase is due to Artificial Intelligence posts.

F)  I wondered what the least viewed Genea-Musings post was in 2025.  I know that Treasure Chest Thursday, Wordless Wednesday, Census Sunday, 52 Ancestors and Seavers in the News posts are not that popular, but they are the most useful to my research.  The least viewed blog post in 2025 (to date) had 91 views.

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- What Genealogy "Rabbit Hole" Did You Go Down Recently?

 Calling all Genea-Musings Fans: 

 It's Saturday Night Again - 

Time For Some More Genealogy Fun!!

1)  What genealogy "rabbit hole" did you go down recently?  Did you have genealogy fun?  How did it help your genealogy research?

Here's mine:

I love going down genealogy rabbit holes!!  It's how I find new tools and techniques and it's enjoyable - FUN!  This past week, I've gone down two rabbit holes for an extended period of time:

1)  Creating poetry (on ChatGPT-4o) and songs (on Suno.com) that describe my genealogy research and interests using Artificial Intelligence tools.   So far, I've written up some of my creations in Genea-Musings:

*  "The Tale of Devier Smith" in AI-Created Rhyme and Song
*  Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Write a Genealogy Poem Using Artificial Intelligence

Here are my current songs on Suno.com:

*  The Blacksmith's Tale
*  The Tale of Devier Smith

*  Helix of Our Souls

There are also other poems that I've prompted ChatGPT to write that I have published on facebook, and others that I haven't published, but I'm saving the prompts and the poems in word processing files - perhaps I'll publish a book of genealogy poetry in the future!

I am not a creative person in the sense of telling stories or writing songs.  I am an aerospace engineer and genealogy researcher dealing in facts and analyzing them.  I can write excellent prompts to an AI tool asking for a poem or song or article.  Hopefully, some of these poems and songs wil inspire my relatives to learn more about their ancestors.  Yes - it was, and still is, great genealogy fun for me!

2)  Using the AncestryDNA Pro Tools to identify my relationships with DNA matches using the Shared Matches of Shared Matches tool.  I wrote AncestryDNA Pro Tools - Shared Matches of Shared Matches Are Great!  In several hours yesterday, I added notes and lines in RootsMagic for six new DNA Matches that are Richman and Rich descendants using this tool.  Some required doing significant genealogy work to find parents of the matches. 

This fun time helped me add relatively close cousins to my family tree and demonstrated to me how complex and convoluted family trees can be.  There are a lot more DNA matches to connect with my tree!

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - the SNGF Genealympics- Week 3

It's Saturday Night again, time for lots more Genealogy Fun, but also the 2012 Summer Olympics are on all day for 2 more days!!! 


Long time  readers of Genea-Musings and other genea-blogs will recall the 2008 Genea-Blogger Group Games, created by Thomas MacEntee, Kathryn Doyle and Miriam Midkiff - see the competition categories here.

Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to COMPETE in the 2012 SNGF Genealympics. Your effort can extend until Sunday, 12 August. 

For these 2012 SNGF Genealympics, the motto is "Research, Cite, Analyze, Resolve, Conclude!"  

Competitors can:

1)  Perform one or more of the challenges outlined in Announcing the Summer 2008 Genea-Blogger Group Games!  Same medal levels.

2)  Perform one or more challenges outlined below (created by me on the spur of the moment here!): 

a)  See the 28 July post - Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - the SNGF  - Genealympics I - compete in any or all of the events described. 

b)  See the 4 August post - Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - the SNGF Genealympics, Week 2 - compete in any or all of the additional events described.

 c)  New Event:  1940 Census Search Race:  Search for the family of Virgil Carringer (age 26, born TN), wife Evelyn (age 31, born OK), and daughter Marie (age 4, born CA).  

 *  Email me at rjseaver@cox.net with your findings, including a complete source citation.
*  First correct one submitted gets the Platinum, second gets the Diamond, third gets the Gold, fourth gets the Silver and fifth gets the Bronze.  Others get experience searching census records and creating source citations.
*  Winners announced on Sunday, 12 August.

 d)  New Event:  Online Person Search for Facts:  Search for information about Jane (Whittle) McKnew, who married Elijah Pickrell McKnew.  Find Facts for:

 *  Her birth date and birth place
*  Her parents names
*  Her marriage date and place
*  The names of all 11 of her children 
*  Her entry in the 1860 U.S. census - name, age, location, head of household
*  Her entry in the 1870 U.S. census - name, age, location, head of household
*  Her entry in the 1880 U.S. census - name, age, location, head of household
*  Her entry in the 1900 U.S. census - name, age, location, head of household
*  Her entry in the 1910 U.S. census - name, age, location, head of household
*  Her name in the 1920 U.S. census - name, age, location, head of household
*  Her death date and place

 Provide some sort of source citation for each Fact in order to qualify for a medal.
